With over 35 years of golf course design experience, Tom Fazio is arguably noted as one of the greatest golf architects of all times. Having won the Best Modern Day Golf Course Architect by Golf Digest five years in a row, no living designer has more credits on the list of America's 100 Greatest Course than Tom Fazio.
After co-designing over 30 courses with Uncle George Fazio, Tom made an attempt to make it on his own in the early 1970's. His goal right from the beginning was to create golf courses that are both challenging yet visually attractive and enjoyable for golfers of all abilities to play. As he puts it, "I strive to create a harmonious transition from existing topographical conditions," and build golf courses that "reflect the natural beauty of the setting."
Maintaining playability with broad fairways and locating flashy and ornate shaped bunkers help to highlight and guide the golfer. Many Fazio traits are apparent at Sawmill Creek; elevated tees for visual aid, free form bunkers, elevated greens and the use of lakes, ponds and creeks for visual effect.
Other notable Fazio designs are: Black Diamond Ranch, Jupiter Hills and PGA National Golf Club in Florida, Pinehurst #8 and Wade Hampton Golf Club in North Carolina and Shadow Creek Golf Club in Nevada. Fazio has only three golf courses located in Ohio and we certainly hope you will enjoy playing just the fourth golf course that he ever designed.
